Amid chants of “Recall Rick!” and signs protesting the fascist-like measures his government has used to eliminate democracy at the local level, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder marched in the Benton Harbor Blossomtime Parade, a particularly tasteless act when you consider the fact that Benton Harbor was the first city in Michigan to have their city council deposed by Michigan Republicans’ “controversial Emergency Manager legislation.” (Which is apparently the polite way to refer to abolishing democracy.)
So, I’m forced to ask… what is it with Ricks, anyway? You’ve got Snyder, whose most egregious offense I’ve already described. There’s Rick Santorum, who used the national stage of a Presidential Election as a platform for some of the most backwards ignorance- and hate-driven politics we’ve ever seen (And won several primaries!). And, on a more personal note, there’s Rick Berman, who took over as Executive Produer of the Star Trek franchise following Gene Roddenberry’s death, and is without question the reason Star Trek has never had a queer character.
If I ever meet someone named Rick, I am running in the opposite direction as fast as I can.
